Top 6 Takeaways from Office Hours: Grad School Search and Applications

On August 14, National NSSLHA held a virtual event for prospective speech-language pathology and audiology students. The event brought together students and professionals to discuss topics relevant to applying to graduate school. Watch the entire event below:

1. CSDCAS Application Process: Panelists emphasized the importance of thoroughly completing the CSDCAS application, including providing comprehensive details about academic history, relevant experiences, and a well-crafted personal statement. They stressed the need to stay organized and adhere to deadlines for each program. They also shared information about how to receive a CSDCAS fee assistance.

2. Targeting the Right Schools: Panelists advised attendees to carefully research programs to find those that align with their needs, career goals, and interests. They suggested evaluating factors such as cost, program specializations, faculty expertise, and clinical opportunities, and tailoring applications to reflect a genuine interest in each program. They also shared resources to research programs, such as ASHA’s EdFind.

3. Creating a Strong Resume: Tips were provided on how to build an impactful resume by highlighting relevant academic achievements, research, volunteer work, and employment. Panelists recommended focusing on significant roles and responsibilities and ensuring the resume is well-organized and relevant to the field of communication sciences and disorders (CSD).

4. Writing an Effective Personal Statement: Panelists discussed the importance of crafting a compelling personal statement that reflects your authentic self. Encouraging students to focus on individual experiences, motivations, and career aspirations. Advising students to go beyond the desire to help people and instead exploring the impact the student hopes to make in this field. They encouraged providing specific examples that demonstrate commitment and readiness for a career in CSD, including how experiences in other careers or majors offer transferrable skills.

5. Preparing for Interviews: Guidance was given on how to prepare for interviews by researching common questions and practicing responses. Panelists advised being ready to discuss experiences, motivations, and field knowledge confidently. They emphasized showcasing enthusiasm for the program and aligning with the program’s values and goals. And being prepared with your own questions about the program.

6. Managing Letters of Recommendation: Panelists highlighted the importance of effectively managing letters of recommendation by providing recommenders with clear information about goals and deadlines. Dr. DeRuiter shared a blog with quick tips for students. The panel also advised showing appreciation for their support and understanding that if a recommender declines, it’s often due to their assessment of their ability to provide a strong reference rather than a reflection of the applicant’s qualifications.
