ASHA Certification Standard Changes Are Coming Next Year—Get Ready

Did you know … whether you’re an audiology or speech-language pathology student, as of January 1, 2020, ASHA will have new certification requirements that could affect your eligibility to become an ASHA Certified Member!

First, check out our breakdown of the changes for both audiology and speech-language pathology students.

Now, let us help you navigate the process …

2019 Graduates (Master’s or AuD Programs)

For those of you graduating from a master’s or AuD program in 2019, you can still apply for your CCC-A or CCC-SLP under the “current” 2012 Audiology Standards or 2014 SLP Standards.

But to avoid delays (or worse, having to take additional coursework!), you must complete the online CCC-A or CCC-SLP application process before December 31, 2019. This includes submitting your application dues and fees. Won’t have your transcripts and/or verification forms by this date? That’s okay! You can submit those afterwards.

SLP master’s students: If you are applying for the CCC-SLP, this means you’ll be applying for ASHA Certification before starting your Clinical Fellowship (totally okay to do!). Should you postpone and begin your application after December 31, 2019, you’ll be required to comply with the 2020 standards.

2020 or Later Graduates (Master’s or AuD Programs)

For those of you graduating from a master’s or AuD program in 2020 or later, you will have to apply for your CCC-A or CCC-SLP under the “new” 2020 Audiology Standards or 2020 SLP Standards. We encourage you to review these standards now to make sure you don’t run into any hiccups down the road.

AuD students: If you didn’t complete all of your clinical practicum hours under a CCC-A certificate holder during your doctoral degree program, that’s okay! If you’ve completed the hours post-graduation, you can still apply for the CCC-A under the new audiology standard.
